Jesus, the Light of the World
Continuing His conversation with the Jews from chapter seven, Jesus declares Himself to be the Light of the world. The Jewish leaders respond by challenging the validity of His testimony, and Jesus responds by explaining how His witness is true. As He speaks to their origin, He tells them they will die in their sin if they don't place their faith in Him and that His crucifixion will authenticate what He's been telling them. Although many believed in Him because of His words, He challenged them to abide in His words for, in so doing, they would know the truth, and the truth would set them free. When they appealed to their Abrahamic heritage, He revealed the contradiction between their claim and their actions and identified who their actual father was.
